Viterbo is a city in Lazio, Italy, situated in the centre of the region of Tuscia, at the foot of the Cimini mountains. It is the capital of the province of Viterbo and is known as the 'City of Popes' due to its long history of papal residence. It is also one of Italy's most picturesque cities, with its cobbled streets, medieval buildings and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Viterbo has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The average temperature in the summer months is around 25°C (77°F), while in winter it can drop to as low as 5°C (41°F). Rainfall is fairly evenly spread throughout the year, with the wettest months being October and November.
Viterbo is home to a number of historic sites and attractions, including the Palazzo dei Papi, a 13th-century palace that was once the residence of the Popes; the Duomo di San Lorenzo, a Romanesque cathedral; and the Rocca Albornoziana, a 14th-century fortress. Other popular attractions include the Parco dei Mostri, a sculpture park featuring bizarre figures from Roman mythology, and the Terme dei Papi, a thermal spa.
As well as sightseeing, visitors to Viterbo can enjoy a range of activities, including shopping in the city's many markets and boutiques, exploring the nearby countryside on foot or by bike, and sampling the local cuisine in one of the city's many restaurants and bars. For those looking for a more active experience, Viterbo also offers a range of outdoor activities, such as hiking, rock climbing, and horse-riding.
Viterbo has a range of accommodation options, from budget hotels to luxury resorts. For those looking for a more authentic experience, there are also a number of traditional bed and breakfasts located in the city centre. Most hotels and guesthouses also offer car rental services, allowing visitors to explore the region at their own pace.
